by Tuong Van Võ, Famous Pagoda of
Vietnam
The pagoda is located in Duong Xuan Ha Village, Thuy Xuan
commune, Huê City, Thua Thiên - Huê province, five kilometers
southwest of the city center. It was An Duong Temple built in
1843 by Most Venerable Nhat Dinh. At one time, his mother was
terribly sick, so she was advised by the doctors to eat fish and
meat for health recuperation. Every morning the Most Venerable
got some fish and meat by himself to feed his mother. Therefore,
he received a lot of comments from the local people. King Tu Duc
appeciated him as a dutiful son so he gave the pagoda an
escutcheon named Tu Hieu (Filial Piety). The Most Venerable
passed away in 1847 (Dinh Mui year). On the second month of the
Mau Than year (1848), Eunuches Duong Oai, Dang Tin, Nguyen Khanh
raised money to buy the land to donate to the pagoda, showing
their respect to Most Venerable Nhat Dinh's contribution. The
pagoda was built splendidly and solemnly. It was restored in the
years of 1894, 1931, 1962, and 1971.
