Deer Park monastery
Deer Park monastery, located in the
"hidden hills" outside Escondido, was established in
July 2000. The land of 400 some acres, abandoned for many years,
is quickly being transformed into a peaceful refuge for the
surrounding communities as well as for friends far away.
Although this monastery does not have any huge Buddha statues or
elaborate temple gates, the natural beauty of the mountains, the
fresh air, the warm sunshine and the sincere dharma friends are
our greatest adornments. Monks and nuns trained in the practice
of mindfulness and engaged Buddhism live at the monastery. Many
lay people consider Deer park as their spiritual home; a
healthy, supportive community offering true friendship and
acceptance; a place to feel at peace and free from stress and
worries; a place to develop our compassion, insight, and sense
of togetherness and a safe place for children to play.
Our practice is centered on enjoying the
miracles of life available in the present moment, being mindful
of our thoughts, words and actions throughout the day and
benefiting from the collective energy of a sangha, a practicing
community of friends. Awareness of breathing, walking peacefully
and mindfully wherever we go and developing our understanding
and capacity to love in the atmosphere of community are some of
the ways we practice mindfulness in everyday life.
Every Thursday and Sunday Deer Park opens her
gates for Days of Mindfulness. The day begins at 9am (please
arrive a few minutes early) with a video dharma talk by Ven. Thich
Nhat Hanh, outdoor walking meditation, a silent lunch and
dharma discussion. The day usually ends by 4:30pm. The first
Sunday of each month we also have recitation of the mindfulness
training and program for children and teenagers. We also accept
guests to stay and practice with us for w week or more. Arrival
day is Friday.
